Should I get a logo from Fiverr?
Several years back, many designers across the world were in shock due to a new company emerging; Fiverr. Fiverr is a platform that would bring together a seller (designer) and a consumer (client) and allow the designer to provide services for the client - undervalued services. Many designers saw this as a chance to make a lot of money, where as many clients saw this as an opportunity to get ‘great’ underpaid work. The platform consists of a variety of services such as videos, photo retouching, logo design, branding , voice overs and more. Unfortunately, logo designs are very popular on Fiverr as many business owners have purchased the cheapest of logos on that platform. If you are planning to do so, this may allow you to think twice before you do.
What Is Fiverr?
As mentioned, Fiverr is and online platform that sells all kinds of creative services. Fiverr is the middle man, and of-course, takes a percentage off every transaction. The name ‘Fiverr’ is derived from the fact that services start from $5 - yes, $5. So approximately £3 which is insane. Not every creative service on the platform is sold at that price but that is the typical price. In order for the seller and buy to do business, the seller may put up a ‘gig’ which is a service they are offering a long with a price. The buyer then has a chance to choose that gig (where there is literally thousands of the same quality of work) and communicate with the seller on the platform. For example, if the buyer were to purchase a logo design, they would be able to chose from around 3 packages; basic, standard and premium. The price will vary as premium being the most expensive. If you have a low budget, Fiverr will certainly cater for your needs.
Low Quality Service
At an average price of $5, would you expect the designer to put their maximum effort into your new logo? Ofcourse not. Fiverr is a platform that many strive to make fast and easy money. This will mean that they will spend as little time and effort on a project as possible that is just about “good”. Additionally, it is likely that designers are not confident in their ability enough to sell services at a high price, via their own website, so they utilise Fiverr as consumers will expect to receive a low quality service.
What Should a Logo Do?
By definition, a logo design is a symbol adopted by an organisation to identify there products/ services. Therefore, a logo design should be a mark that is memorable, simple and appropriate for that specific company. When seen, previous/ existing consumers should recognise a logo instantly due to it’s clarity. When seen by new/ potential consumers, the logo should give off some sort of indication as to what a company does. These may seem as a simple thing to do, however being ‘simple’ is actually a skill that requires time to learn which the majority of logo designers on Fiverr lack. Time Is Money
When purchasing a logo, there is many variables that determine the price for the designer. The hours worked on the project is not the only time you are paying for but also for the time the designer has spent on their craft in their entire life. It wouldn’t make any sense to not take into account the experience the designer has, especially all the late nights and early mornings invested into their craft. Skilled designers are also able to simplify which isn’t as easy as you think. You will find the majority of logo designs on Fiverr very busy and tacky looking. If you are looking for a logo but unsure of what the benchmark quality needs to be, have a look at the companies your admire in your niche. For example, if you are a coffee business have a look at the boldness of the Starbucks siren logo. Fast-food restaurant, take a look at Mc Donald’s simple and unique golden arches logo.
Designers Are Valuable.
Designers are problem solvers. Period. For the best chance of your problem to be solved, It is vital that you build a relationship with the designer that you go for. Think of it as marriage. You go on a few dates, you get to know each other and then you decide whether or not they are the best fit. This is what Fiverr doesn’t cater for. There’s not much time for ‘getting to know each other’ as the platform is all about making money fast; quantity over quality. Typically, the assumption is that designers are only good at creating. That is completely false. Many designers have unique backgrounds and upbringings which has given them opportunities to solve problems that the average person couldn’t do. Freelance designers especially, are business people. They are able to solve many problems that can generate a lot of money and being able to design is only a talent/ skill that they have acquired. Unlike other industries, freelance designers are fortunate to successfully work with a wide variety of clients as they have incredible transferable skills. Think about it, how many other jobs do you know that can literally work within ANY industry…? So when hiring a designer, bare in mind that they are serious experts at what they do and can bring great value for you business.
When To Use Fiverr?
Fiverr isn’t just a platform of underpaid work. In fact, these days some designers have increased the prices ranging from £300-£800 which is reasonable. Fiverr can be excellent when you need ongoing work such as social media posts. For example, let imagine you were starting a food delivery business that has a mobile app, first hire and build a relationship with a designer that you are completely confident they will meet/ exceed your expectations on the design. Once the basis of a quality logo/ brand identity is established, then you have the foundation of solid a solid identity to work with. It may then make sense to hire someone on Fiverr if you needed for example a roller banner designed, as assets are already provided which means there is less risk involved.
Overall, if you are someone who values your business interns of being unique, having a good first impression and long-term growth, then hiring a freelance not on fiver is defiantly your best option. Alternative platforms such as Behance and dribble are excellent places to find top quality work. you will be able to search for any type of project and build a relationship with the designer. However, if you are not really bothered about the value that a designer can bring for your business, as well as the impact a logo can make on your businesses first impressions, and focusing on your budget then maybe Fiverr is the best option for you. You will be able to find many designers that can provide what you are looking for but remember - you get what you pay for.
